If you have ever compared your GA4 reports with Google Ads and found two different conversion numbers, you are not alone. It is one of the most common questions business owners ask us, and it usually starts with a worrying thought: is my tracking broken?

Sometimes it is. But often, both tools are working exactly as designed, and they still disagree. Here is why, which number you should trust for which decision, and how to close the gap.

The Short Answer

GA4 and Google Ads do not measure conversions the same way. They use different attribution models, different counting rules, and different time windows. A perfect match between them is impossible, and chasing one wastes time. The real goal is a small, explainable difference, and tracking that is accurate enough in both places to make good budget decisions.

6 Reasons Your Numbers Do Not Match

1. Different Attribution Models

GA4 defaults to data-driven attribution across all your channels, so a conversion gets shared between the ads, emails, and organic visits that led to it. Google Ads, by default, gives the credit to the last Google ad click before the conversion. Same sale, two different stories about who earned it.

2. Different Counting Rules

Google Ads can count every conversion after one click, or only one conversion per click, depending on your settings. GA4 counts an event every time it happens, or once per session, depending on how the event is configured. If someone buys twice, the two tools may report one conversion and two conversions for the exact same behavior.

3. Click Date Versus Conversion Date

Google Ads reports a conversion on the day of the click, even if the purchase happened a week later. GA4 reports it on the day it happened. Compare a short date range and the numbers will look wrong even when nothing is broken. Google Ads data also keeps changing for a while as late conversions arrive.

4. Missing Or Broken Tags

This is the one that is actually your problem. If your Google Ads tag fires on the thank-you page but your GA4 event does not, or the tag is missing on some landing pages, or a site update broke the data layer, the tools drift apart for a real reason. A mismatch bigger than about 10 to 20 percent deserves an audit, not an excuse.

5. Consent, Ad Blockers And iOS

When a visitor rejects cookies, uses an ad blocker, or browses on iOS with tracking restrictions, browser-based tags lose the signal. Industry-wide, 20 to 30 percent of conversions can go missing when tracking is browser-only. GA4 and Google Ads lose different pieces of that data, so the gap grows in ways that look random.

6. Importing GA4 Conversions Into Google Ads

If Google Ads imports conversions from GA4, the numbers still will not match GA4 itself. Google Ads applies its own rules to imported conversions, including counting settings and attribution windows, so the imported number is a third version of the truth.

Which Number Should You Trust?

Use each tool for the decision it was built for: Google Ads numbers for optimizing Google campaigns, because the bidding algorithm learns from the conversions inside Google Ads. GA4 numbers for understanding the whole journey across channels, because GA4 sees more than ads. Your store, CRM or backend as the final truth for revenue, because money in the bank outranks every dashboard.

When the three disagree wildly, the fix is not picking a favorite. The fix is repairing the tracking underneath all of them.

How To Get The Numbers Close

  1. Audit every tag. Confirm the GA4 tag, the Google Ads tag, and your event setup fire once, on the right pages, with the right values.
  2. Add server-side tracking and Enhanced Conversions, so the signals lost to browsers and consent choices are recovered properly and legally.
  3. Align your settings. Use the same conversion window and counting logic where you can, and document where you cannot.
  4. Deduplicate. One purchase should be one conversion everywhere, never two.
  5. Write it down. A simple tracking map, every event, where it fires, and which platforms receive it, ends most arguments about whose number is right.
